The Munich Air Disaster: Sixty-Six Years On

A Tragic Event That Changed Manchester Forever

A cold winter's afternoon in Munich 1958 shook the world - and changed Manchester forever. Sixty-six years on from the tragic shocking events of 6 February 1958 the Munich Air Disaster remains.

On that fateful day, a British European Airways plane slid off the runway at Munich-Riem Airport, killing 23 people, including eight players from the Manchester United football team. The team was returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade.

The disaster was a devastating blow to the city of Manchester, and the football club in particular. The team was known as the "Busby Babes", and were one of the most successful in England at the time. The loss of so many young and talented players was a major setback for the club.

The Munich Air Disaster has been the subject of much speculation and controversy over the years. Some people believe that the pilot was to blame for the crash, while others point to the icy conditions on the runway. Whatever the cause, the disaster remains a tragedy that has left a lasting legacy on the city of Manchester.
